Meet Devin McGuire, Assistant Editor

Devin joined us in 2007
from the University of Maine at Farmington's
BFA in Creative Writing Program.
We are thrilled that he has agreed to stay on as Assistant Editor.
Bio:
Devin McGuire holds a BFA in Creative Writing with a minor in Philosophy from the University of Maine at Farmington. His poetry has been published online and in print
in The Beat and The Sandy River Review. His work has also appeared in The Sun Journal. In his free time Devin enjoys sports, music, hiking and fishing. He currently resides in the beautiful wild western foothills of Maine where with relative ease he can pursue his outdoor passions.
Excerpts from Devin's Artist's Statement:
"At the age of 32 I decided to take my growing addiction with words into a place of learning and pursue a degree in Creative Writing. Just as a musician needs to learn chords, and progressions of structure with a chorus, a bridge etc. before he or she can really go off on any artistic virtuosity by way of free solo and free expression, so a writer must learn the forms and craft of his or her creative medium. It’s just like how we were taught to stay in the lines with our crayons as children. Unique character aside, while I believe anyone can write or become a writer, I believe the ones who work the best in this creative art, will be the ones who completely immerse themselves in it and gather up as many tools as they can find. Presently I hope to use my newly-learned knowledge of the forms and craft of writing to rein in my often times overbearing erratic emotion and directness and help to create things meaningful and lasting; something that people will not only enjoy today, but something that will remain as a statement to the future. Like the truly “attention deficit” or “overload” disordered man, my focus today remains all over the place. I’m interested in the novel, short fiction, poetry, non-fiction, drama and screenplay. If I am fortunate enough to find the time, I will write them all of them in this life."
A Sample of Devin's Poetry*
A Walk Back From the Bar
Another lost summer night,
love and women bending me,
while the sky, pale blues
darkening purple
fade to black with pinprick fires
spreads expansive immensity
filling me with awe
and wonder for this twisted
and tormented life.
